Akinade Onigbinde, the Coach of Abuja-based Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) FC, on Saturday described Alex Iwobi as a talented player and game changer whose ability to convert chances to goals was unequalled. Onigbinde said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on the Super Eagles 1-0 defeat of Zambia’s Chipolopolo in a Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier in Uyo. He said that Nigeria had proved to the World that it was ready for World Cup with young and talented stars like Iwobi. “As soon as Moses Simon was changed with Iwobi, I reassured myself of victory. “This is because Iwobi has always proved to be a game changer even in his club, Arsenal FC of England,’’ Onigbinde said. The coach, who congratulated Nigeria on its qualifications for the World Cup, said there was more to do. He called on the management of the team to work more on the defence, especially the left and right full backs. Alex Iwobi sealed Nigeria’s qualification campaign with a lon

The Super Eagles of Nigeria sealed qualification for the 2018 World Cup after beating Zambia 1-0 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Saturday, October 7, 2017. Arsenal youngster Alex Iwobi came on from the bench to score the all-important goal in the 73rd minute after an evenly-matched contest between both teams. Nigerian coach, Gernot Rohr named the same starting line-up that won four points against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, with Odion Ighalo and Victor Moses leading the line for the third consecutive game. Despite scoring in the 2-1 victory against the Zambians in Ndola in the first leg last year, Premier League youngsters Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho had to settle for the substitutes' bench. Zambian coach Wedson Nyirenda named Fashion Sakala and Alex Ngonga to lead the attacking line with hopes of keeping his team's qualification hopes alive. The cinema, from which the road takes its name, was built by his great grandfather Omo-Oba Daniel Adebambo Joshua in the 50s, and is one of the oldest of such facilities in the country. Mafe joined hundreds of Sagamu youth to watch the fight in an open air viewing event organised by the Sagamu Youth Congress, and was thrilled by both the turnout and the outcome. "We are proud of what he has achieved as a son of S

Meet First Woman to Coach Men's National Team in Africa (Photos)

Benin may not have qualified for the FIBA AfroBasket 2017 Final Round, but the team etched its name in the sand of times due to head coach Brigitte Affidehome Tonon. While Tonon’s name may not be popular in basketball circles, she surely has her path clearly laid out as the first female head coach of a men’s national team on the African continent, after making her introduction during the FIBA AfroBasket 2017 Group C Qualifiers. There have been cases of female coaches taking charge of men’s teams at club level and winning national titles. But it is Tonon who no doubt has made history in coaching by this singular feat. It shouldn’t come as a surprise given that her father, Pierre Coffi Tonon, has a rich basketball history. He is the current Secretary General of the Federation Beninoise de Basketball (FBBB) and has been a respected technical hand in coaching, refereeing and a FIBA match commissioner. ‘’I see them as players that I am working with and nothing more’’ - To

I am planning for next season at Arsenal - Wenger

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has said he is planning for next season, as if he is staying at the club. The 67-year-old made it clear during his Friday press conference, that the uncertainty around his future, won't affect transfer plans for the summer. Multiple reports have claimed that the board have tabled a new two-year contract, for Wenger to extend his 21-year stay in North London. "Of course I plan for next season," Wenger said. "That's why I told you, do I stay for two months or 10 years, I plan for [the future]. I do my job exactly the same." Arsenal are sixth in the table ahead of the Manchester City game this weekend and Wenger said that the club can attract top talent regardless of his own status. "I think Arsenal is a world brand today that is respected all over the world. And the Arsenal name is bigger than my name," he said. "And coming to Arsenal is more important. Dalung queries NFF's $500,000 bill for Nigeria, Senegal friendly

Image
Minister of Youth and Sport, Solomon Dalung, has asked the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), to explain how it spent $500,000 on the international friendly between the Super Eagles and Senegal. The NFF secured the money from sponsors and part of it was supposed to be used to pay players' appearance fee for the match. The federation reportedly spent all the money on accomodation, feeding and return tickets for some of the players. It is understood that some players have not been paid their $2,000 appearance fee. Dalung picked interest in the issue, when the NFF appealed for its monthly allocation to be released, so they can offset the players' appearance fee. The Minister said he would only release the allocation when the federation explains how it spent the $500,000. ------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Promote Your Song or Mixtape on http://na

Pinnick, Mikel stops Musa from dumping Super Eagles

Image
Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, President Amaju Pinnick and Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel have stopped striker Ahmed Musa from announcing his retirement from international football. Recall that the Leicester City forward would have announced his international retirement after he was removed as the national team vice-captain prior to Nigeria friendly match against Senegal in London. Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr had announced that Ogenyi Onazi and not Musa was now the Super Eagles assistant captain and would lead the squad in the international friendly. The decision caused disaffection in the team as some of Musa's mates viewed the development as humiliation of the former CSKA Moscow man. Musa who was named the team's captain by erstwhile coach Sunday Oliseh was demoted to vice-captain by Samson Siasia who installed Mikel as the leader of his team but the former VVV Venlo forward has been left dejected by the latest development.
