Why We Stormed National Assembly to Protest - Super Falcons Captain Opens Up
The Super Falcons protest
Rita Chikwelu, the Super Falcons captain, has explained why the players decided to storm the National Assembly complex in protest yesterday.
According to her, it was to possibly see the President, Muhammadu Buhari, who addressed a joint session of the National Assembly.
The Authority reports that Chikwelu, who spoke at Agura Hotel said: "We are not happy with the situation of things in our team, so we decided to find a means of seeing Mr. President and explain our predicament to him. Unfortunately, we could not see him as he was not present at the time we were there.
"Though we were addressed by Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, who sympathized with us, and told us that government was aware of the problems and that efforts were been made to remedy the situation.
"It is close to two weeks that we came back from Cameroon after winning the AWCON, most of us are yearning to go back home to meet our loved ones to celebrate the festive season. But we cannot go home empty handed as most of us are bread winners to our various families.
"We know how much that our rivals, Cameroon received from their government, corporate organizations and individuals as part of motivation. Only yesterday we heard that Samuel Eto’o gave each Cameroonian player cash worth about ten million Naira. But back here, there is nothing like that, and our little bonuses are been withheld.
"So we urge all Nigerians to come to our aid and beg the authorities concerned to pay us our entitlements as football is the only business we have. And whatever we make now is what we will use as retirement benefits," she concluded.
