Nigerians protest increase in Lekki toll gates tariffs
Lekki Concession Company (LCC) has announced an increase in the toll tariff that vehicle owners will be charged at its toll plazas starting from Wednesday, November 8, 2017.
In a notice handed out by the company, it disclosed that the toll tariff will be adjusted for both the Lekki-Epe Expressway and the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge toll plazas.
According to the notice, the new rates at the Admiralty Circle Plaza means motorcycles are now expected to pay N100; salon cars and tricycles, N200; sport utility vehicles, N250; light trucks and 2-axle buses, N400; heavy duty trucks or buses with two or more heavy axles, N1000, and commercial danfo buses will pay N150.
At the Link Bridge Plaza, motorcycles will pay N200; salon cars, N300; mini vans sports utility vehicles and light trucks, N400; and light trucks and 2-axle buses will pay N1000.
The hike has caused a reaction on social media as many people have shown their dissatisfaction with the perceived injustice of the price increase.
On petition site, Citizen Go, a certain Ngozi Ihedigbo has already started a petition campaign calling on the state governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, to put a stop to the planned increase.
Her petition read, "We say "No to any increase to toll fares".
"Nigeria is a country in recession, people have no jobs and the ones with jobs can hardly survive on their salaries.
"Yet all the government is doing is impose hardship on innocent people for their selfish gain. There is no reason why there should be an increase on the Lekki-Victoria Island toll and we need this action to be stopped.
"We can no longer sit and fold our arms and say 'its business as usual'. We pay taxes, even though we do not see any major improvements to quantify these payments.
"We are our own government as we provide our own water, light and in most cases our roads. Yet all the government does is take, take and take from us.
"Lekki-VI toll fare should actually be going down, rather there is a 70% increase in toll fee starting November 8th 2017.
"Did anyone get a 70% raise in salary? Did Nigeria inflation go up by 70%? Yet LCC does not deem it fit to negotiate with its stakeholders rather they impose these increment on us with absolutely no explanations."
After the campaign was created on Friday morning, it has been signed by 2,177 people at the time of publishing.
The change in toll tariff is expected to lead to a hike in the bus fares by commercial drivers who regularly pass through both plazas.
At the time of publishing, the company has failed to respond to emails and text messages asking it to explain the reason for the hike.
