It has been revealed that the traditional regalia of the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, was reportedly destroyed in the fire that engulfed the palace on Tuesday afternoon. Ibrahim Farinloye, the spokesperson of the National Emergency Management Authority, NEMA, while speaking said that the affected section of the palace where traditional regalia were kept was destroyed by fire. He added that the mysterious fire was quickly nipped in the bud by the various emergency agencies on ground. “The cause of the fire could not be ascertained immediately. But it has been put off by the combined efforts of federal fire service and state fire service,” he said. The operatives of the Nigerian Police on Wednesday, arraigned Dare Omotoso, an aide to Governor Ayodele Fayose, for allegedly stealing granite worth N5 million. The 64-year-old Omotoso, who is Commissioner 2 in the Local Government Service Commission (LGSC), and was docked at an Ado Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him by the court clerk. The charge sheet reads: “That you, Dare Omotoso, sometimes in the month of August 2016 and September 2016 did steal granites and stone dust valued about Five Million, One Hundred and Forty Thousand, Eight Hundred Naira (N5,140,800) property of Primadet & Co. A Minna Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, sentenced five randy men to three years imprisonment each after they admitted committing adultery. They were, however, given an option  of  N150,000  fine each. The accused – Mohammed Faruk, Johnbosco Dedan, David Momoh, Sunday Ekuese and Vincent Emmanuel – were arraigned alongside Naomi Abdulmajeed, on a  two-count charge of enticing a married woman and committing adultery. The Prosecutor, Insp  Emmanuel Danladi, had told the court that one Abdulmajeed Akin of  Tunga,  Minna,  reported the matter at the Tudun Wada Police Station on April 28. Danladi quoted the complainant as alleging that his wife, Naomi, had an intimate relationship with the other accused persons who each had sex with her on different occasions and at different venues. He said that some of the accused persons were said to have slept with complainant’s wife in her matrimonial home. The offences, he said, were contrary to sections 389, 387 and 388 of the penal code.

The Senate on Tuesday began the screening of 27 Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) nominees sent to it by President Muhammadu Buhari for confirmation, NAN reports. The leader of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, presented the president’s request for approval of the nominees at plenary in Abuja. After the motion, the senate directed its Committee on Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to screen the nominees and report back in two weeks. We had reported earlier that there was a fire outbreak at the palace of the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu on Tuesday afternoon which affected a section of the mansion of the influential Oba at the Iga Iduganran area of Lagos Island. It was gathered that the fire started around 1.30pm from an air condition in an apartment inside the palace, destroying furniture and other household items in the room as the Kabiyesi has already been taken to a safe place. Thick smokes billowing to the sky, attracted a crowd to the area, but the palace gate was, however, shut to the crowd as firefighters from the Lagos State Fire Service, Shari Iganmu and Ilupeju stations, battled to put it out. The Asset Management Company of Nigeria has injected N1.5bn in Arik Airline Ltd to safeguard its operations since its takeover. The Arik Air Chief Executive Officer, Capt. Roy Ilegbodu, said this at a news conference in Lagos while highlighting the company’s operations since its takeover by AMCON. Ilegbodu said that the funds injected by AMCON helped in the stabilisation of the airline’s operations, prevention of its collapse and payment of staff salaries. He said the funds were injected into the company in the first couple of weeks the new management took over the airline. Ilegbodu said that the management met a lot of refunds when it took over the company, noting that it paid between N60m and N75m to customers as a refund on a weekly basis. He said that the company had remained in business due to AMCON ‘s support, adding that the support helped in sustaining the airline operations in spite of huge debts incurred before the Federal Government takeover.
